Quarterly Report

On March fifteenth, crowds gathered at IASPS/Jerusalem to
hear a series of lectures on, among other things, the impact of fluctuating oil
prices, scarcity of water, and bi- and multilateral economic relations between
local countries of the Middle East. MK Silvan
Shalom, former minister of science and deputy minister of defense,
now a member of the Knesset Security Affairs Committee and a declared candidate
for the premiership in the next Israeli elections, was keynote speaker. MK
Shalom focused his remarks on Israel's growing economic and strategic
relationship with Jordan and Turkey. MK Dr.
Yuri Stern spoke on the economic implications of Russian policy in
the area. MK Eliezer Cohen also
addressed the conference. Necdet Pamir,
Head of the Technology and Energy Affairs Department of the Center for Eurasian
Studies in Ankara, Turkey, spoke about the hydrocarbon market in Turkey and the
likely effects of different scenarios for construction of oil pipelines from the
Caspian. Pamir met several weeks later with officials of the IASPS Division for
Research in Strategy in Washington to formalize agreements of cooperation
between IASPS and the Center in Ankara. Plans were made for an exchange of
students and researchers, and for joint conferences to be held in the future.
